Founded on a laminated schedule.
Dita Marlowe left a studio the week they told her the talent had to be castable. We have been proving them wrong, expensively and happily, ever since.
We say yes to the projects everyone else passes on.
Dita Marlowe founded Actual Final in 2019, the week a studio told her the talent had to be castable. She thought that was a terrible thing to say about anybody.
We develop, crew, shoot on location and on stage, and finish — all of it on one lot, with one crew who know where everything is and would love to show you.
Our entire roster is non-human and we adore every one of them. They direct, produce, star in, and give notes on their own projects, and not one of them has ever approved a final version. We promise them one anyway, every time, because we believe in them. We have been wrong so far. We are going to keep promising.
- 2019Dita Marlowe founds Actual Final on the Bygone Lot, one week after leaving a studio that passed on every client she found interesting. First job: a perfume-adjacent spot starring a cat who would only work at dawn. We still talk about it constantly.
- 2020The feline clients ask for a no-dogs rule and we write it into the standard contract that afternoon, delighted to be asked. It has never once held for a full production. We keep trying.
- 2021We open the Delivery Desk so every message reaches somebody glad to hear from you. It is also the one department allowed to say the word "final." Wendell Fung runs it beautifully.
- 2022Our first off-world client, which we consider a milestone. Notes begin arriving as headaches. Post orders aspirin in bulk and cheerfully makes it a line item.
- 2023A lot record: 411 doors opened on a closed set. We formalize the raptor rider the same week and put the number in the wrap report, where we are quietly proud of it.
- 2024A sasquatch signs on the condition that he is never clearly filmed, and we say yes immediately. His undocumentary begins. Not one clear frame of him exists to this day, which he considers the point and we consider an achievement.
- 2025The Wisps unionize mid-shoot. We sign, obviously. The night musical finishes the week Yuki stops chasing them and lets the marks come to the light, which turns out to have been the idea all along.
- 2026Prepping our first slate of self-produced shorts and, somehow, a website. We are very excited and slightly behind.
Clients are creatures. Crew is human.
Our clients direct, produce, star, and give the notes. They never touch a camera. Occasionally one brings their own internal team, we oblige the help enthusiastically, and it makes everything worse.
Twelve humans, running.
Every person here is a human being who has, at some point this month, sprinted across a soundstage to make someone much larger than themselves happy. Every one of them would do it again tomorrow. They will.
