Marv is a reclusive auteur who hired us to shoot his lifelong passion project on one condition: he is never to be clearly filmed. He is the subject. He is also the director. The footage is authentically undocumented — blurry, underexposed, glimpsed — and every frame of it is exactly what he asked for, which is the whole job as far as we are concerned.

Continuity is theoretical, because the subject is theoretical. June Okafor maintains a continuity log for a man who does not appear in it, and she describes it as “the easiest and hardest job in Post, at the same time, forever.” She keeps it beautifully.

He considers every out-of-focus frame a success. On his own terms he is completely correct, and the award nobody can confirm he attended agrees with him.
